Alan McCarthy Wins NSW State Minor Snooker
/The State Minor Snooker was again played at Toukley RSL on the central coast. This is the second year of 3 year deal for the Women’s & Men’s Minor Snooker. Toukley is a great location for a weekend away and some competitive snooker. The club is very comfortable and extremely friendly and of course has excellent facilities. The 6 Toukley tables (4 tables having been re-covered) are a terrific test of Technique and Temperament. 59 players entered the tournament from areas all over the state.
Alan McCarthy has taken out the Title this year, showing his class and maturity, Alan was runner up in 2006. Alan defeated David Liu 4-2; David has been runner up now 2 years in a row. Alan had some good wins showing he was one of the favourites, but didn’t have things all his own way having to survive a close 5 frame tussle with Kiah Bloomfield in the Quarter Final. Kiah having another 5 framer in the final 16 against Jason Hastings. Jason having a good win over Rod Hart to make it through to Sunday. Alan had defeated Mick Hough in the semi final 3-1, Mick was playing well and could have quite easily forced a decider. Mick had survived a Black Ball decider against Brad Abdilla in the last 16, Brad having another good tournament. Russell Johnson had taken Mick all the way in the first round with Mick then defeating the inform Tim Ng in the 2nd round. Mick had a good win against Rob Elsley in the quarters, Rob having survived a 5th frame tussle against Josh Lawrence in the last 16 with both players having chances to win.
On the other side David Liu was having some solid wins with an impressive list of breaks; David also had the highest break of 73. David def Jom Wangta in the semi, Jom was also looking good having a nice win over Brett Watson in the last 16. Nick Waymouth had a good tournament taking out the Tournament Director(grrr) in the last 16 to make the Quarters.
Overall it was a great tournament and as usual all games were played in great spirit, thank you to all the players for supporting the event, and a huge thank you to the referees Gary Knight, Neville Moore, Joe Galea, Al Fletcher, Alex Ansen, Len Wicks, Gareth King , Ron Eyles, Dirk Hellenbroich and assistant tournament director Stuart Tait.
