Grant Schubert Wins 2015 NSW Minor Billiards Title

Newcastle based player Grant Schubert has won this year’s NSW State minor grade billiard title held at Rooty Hill RSL.

A great field of 18 players contested this year’s event. The Saturday started with the 6 pools contesting their round robin matches. Peter Tankard from Hornsby showed some early form knocking in some reasonable breaks, whilst in Pool F Brad Williams who has been out of the game for over 10 years showed signs of his Junior days being a past NSW U21 Billiards champion knocking in a 57 break against Grant Schubert who kindly responded with a 50 break of his own. Brad was able to hold on and win this game by 14 points.

Also during the round robin stages Grant produced the tournaments highest Break, an 87 in his match against Neville Moore. Peter Tankard and Daniel Jenkins also featured with 40+ breaks in the round robin stages.

Our Quarter final matched started on Sunday morning. Peter Tankard was far too strong for fellow Hornsby RSL player David McMahon whilst last year’s runner up Andy De Haan had an early exit against Brad Williams. In the other half of the draw last year’s semi finalist Gene Crossingham made light work of the ever improving Jeff Middleton whilst number 1 qualifier Peter Higham was defeated by Grant Schubert.

The 1.5 hour semi finals saw some great tactical play from Peter Tankard who defeated Brad Williams. In the other semi final Grant Schubert was in impressive form winning his semi final match comfortably against Gene Crossingham.

Both Peter and Grant were making their maiden appearance in this event. In a 2 hour final Grant set the pace early knocking in a 42 and 60 break. Pete was slowly settling but another 2 breaks of 40 and 50 sealed the match for Grant Winning 486-261.

On behalf of BSA NSW Thankyou to Rooty Hill RSL for their continued support of Billiards and to the players for supporting our events. Please keep an eye out for the NSW State Title entry forms which will be published soon. Grant Schubert has gained a free entry into this event where I am sure he will do well.
