“Miss Cue” Takes Women’s Accolades
/Coffs Harbour visitor Judy White-Singh, affectionately known by her friends as “Miss Cue”, has emerged as the worthy winner of the 2013 NSW State Women’s “Minor” Snooker Championship. Runner-up in this event in 2011, Judy was the form player this year and thoroughly deserved her victory. The Championship was staged on 15th – 16th June at Club Toukley RSL.
Judy progressed through this year’s round robin section undefeated and continued her good form into Sunday’s knock-out stage where she recorded two 2-0 victories to claim the title. But the victory was definitely not as easy as this would seem, with 3 of the 4 frames she won on Sunday going down to the black ball. In addition to not dropping a frame throughout the Championship Judy also recorded the highest break.
Local player Joy Perkins also had a solid tournament and was not disgraced by her runner-up effort. Perkins confidence and overall game is steadily improving and, with successive runnerup performances in this event in 2011 and 2012, her time in the spotlight must be getting closer.
The Women’s “Minor” Snooker Championship is a traditional stepping stone for women to become more involved in the game at a tournament level. Unfortunately, a lot of lady players express the opinion that they are “not good enough” to go in tournaments and the ranks of women players are dwindling as a result. With support and encouragement to try the ‘Minor’ format they soon see it can be a fun experience and not as daunting as first thought.
Such was the case again this year and, although entries were once again low, it was pleasing to see 3 players make the effort to travel from Coffs Harbour to compete. It is the aim of the BSA NSW to encourage increased participation in women’s snooker at every opportunity. The event also proved to be very popular with spectators over the two days of competition.
This was the 5th consecutive year that the Women’s ‘Minor’ Snooker has been hosted and sponsored by Club Toukley RSL. During this time the popular Central Coast club has proven to be a wonderful supporter of several State Championships in both snooker and billiards and BSA NSW is extremely proud and appreciative of this relationship. Many thanks to the club’s Board of Directors, management, staff and members for their ongoing hospitality and highly valued support.
