2016 NSW 6 Red Snooker Championship
/This year’s Championships were again held at Club Marconi for the second time, on the 27th & 28th August, the club has fantastic facilities and one of the best Snooker Rooms in Sydney.
A field of 44 players assembled on Saturday for a best of 5 round robin, the group format gives the players plenty of snooker and attracts players that may not normally enter a straight knockout tournament knowing they are guaranteed several games to play.
There were 11 groups of 4, with the top 2 qualify for the last 22 knockout on Sunday morning. The quarter finals onwards were played on Sunday through to the final with some very entertaining snooker on offer throughout the weekend.
Roger FareBrother defeated Glen Wilkinson 6-2 for his 1st NSW State 6 Red Snooker Title, Roger was solid all weekend and played extremely well he also had the highest break, a maximum 75 twice. Congratulations to Roger and also congratulations to Glen for making the final. The final was top draw and was recorded, it can be viewed on FaceBook. Roger and Glen traded frames early for 2 frames each, and it was evident we were in for an entertaining final. But then roger rattled off the next 4 frames in style, converting chances into frames with a string of consistent scoring including a beautiful 33 clearance when 31 behind.
Roger didn’t have it his own way in the semi-final against Shannon Dixon(Current 6 Red Minor Champion) winning 5-4 on the final black. Having chanced his arm on an unusual double. Local knowledge may have helped. Congratulations to Shannon on another great 6 red tournament. Glen in the other semi skipped away from Joe Minici after the scores were 2 each, to win 5-2. Glen had defeated Hassan Kerde 5-3 in the quarters after Hassan lead 3-0. Other notable performances were, Mal Winter making the quarters and was defeated by Joe 5-1. Last year’s winner Jom Wangta was defeated by Fred Borg 4-3 on the Black. Freddie had Defeated Denzel Nicholson in the last 22, 4-1. Congratulations Denzel to qualify for the Knockout stage, what a great game when a 12 yr old can compete against a 68 yr old.
Thank you to all the players who entered, the tournament grows every year now and a big thank you to Club Marconi, and their members, the Marconi Snooker Association particularly Jim Ruisi and Vic Sacco who get up at the crack of dawn to prepare the tables. Vic also refereed a couple of games. And a big thank you to Stuart Tait & Neville Moore.
Until next time, enjoy your snooker
