Roger Farebrother Masterclass
/Roger Farebrother has emerged as a very worthy winner of the inaugural 2012 NSW State Masters Snooker Championship following a convincing 3-0 Final victory over Terry Emmett in last weekend’s event.
The Masters Snooker caters for players over 40 years of age and is a new addition on the annual NSW snooker calendar. This follows the introduction of an Australian Masters Snooker Championship by the ABSC 6 years ago, which has subsequently proven to be very popular and well supported by players. The initial staging of the NSW title attracted a solid 30 entries that enjoyed the round robin qualifying format and this event now looks set to become firmly entrenched and a highly sought-after title.
Club Marconi was very proud to have been involved in this inaugural Championship through hosting and sponsorship and their efforts were instrumental in its overall success. Many thanks to Jim Ruisi, the Snooker Committee and Club Marconi’s Board of Directors for their continued support and assistance to the BSA NSW.
The locals were also extremely proud to see one of their own players claim the title at his home club.
In fact, Roger Farebrother’s performance over the weekend was exceptional and no-one could argue that he does not thoroughly deserve the title after playing particularly well throughout. Undefeated through the round robin stage, he was also the only player not to lose a frame and subsequently entered the seeded knock-out draw in the No.1 position. He then proceeded to defeat very strong opposition from Paul Balzer, Joe Minici and Glen Wilkinson before lining up against Terry Emmett in the Final.
Both players agreed to reduce the Final to best of 5 frames but Farebrother showed little sign of weariness in easily claiming the first two frames as he raced to a 2-0 lead. Emmett should have taken the game into a fourth frame by winning the third, but in attempting to hold for the pink the blue ball stopped agonisingly short of the centre pocket, leaving Farebrother with two simple shots to claim the Championship. Masters Snooker action now moves to the 7th annual Australian Masters Snooker Championship will be held at Mingara on the NSW Central Coast from 20-22 April 2012. Entry forms will be available on the ABSC and also BSA NSW websites shortly.
